The past indefinite tense in Hindi and English

The past indefinite tense, which is also called the Simple past tense, is used to frame a completed action in a time which has been passed away. . The past indefinite or simple past tense is the basic form of past tense in English. Various other forms in past tense include past perfect, past continuous and past perfect continuous. The time in which the action has been completed can be in the recent past or the remote past and action duration is not very important to describe the action. Verb used in past indefinite tense is of simple past form (V2).

पिछले अनिश्चित काल, जिसे सरल अतीत काल भी कहा जाता है, का उपयोग एक समय में पूरी की गई कार्रवाई को पूरा करने के लिए किया जाता है। । अतीत अनिश्चित या सरल भूत काल अंग्रेजी में भूत काल का मूल रूप है। भूत काल में विभिन्न अन्य रूपों में अतीत परिपूर्ण, अतीत निरंतर और अतीत परिपूर्ण निरंतर शामिल हैं। जिस समय में कार्रवाई पूरी हो गई है वह हाल के दिनों में हो सकती है या दूरस्थ अतीत और कार्रवाई की अवधि कार्रवाई का वर्णन करने के लिए बहुत महत्वपूर्ण नहीं है। पिछले अनिश्चित काल में उपयोग की जाने वाली क्रिया सरल भूतकाल फॉर्म (V2) की है।

वाक्य के अंत मैं ता था, ती थी, ते थे, या  या, यी, यी, ये, आ  आता है

The sentences in past indefinite tense can be of following form:

AFFIRMATIVE SENTENCE IN PAST INDEFINITE  :

Syntax: Subject ( I, You, We, They,He, She, etc  ) + Verb  ( Second Form of Verb ) + Object + rest of sentence.

Examples

  • You taught us English – आपने हमें अंग्रेजी सिखाई
  • We saw a cricket match – हमने एक क्रिकेट मैच देखा
  • He used to go for walking – वह घूमने जाता था
  • I could go to school yesterday – मैं कल स्कूल जा सकता था

NEGATIVE SENTENCE IN PAST INDEFINITE  :

Syntax: Subject ( I, You, We, They ) + did not/didn’t + VI ( First Form of Verb ) + Object + rest of sentence.

Note-

  • For the negative past indefinite form of “to do”as an simple verb, use the auxiliary “did”, He didn’t played the piano at the carnival
  • The negative of “have”in the past indefinite is usually build using the auxiliary “did”, but sometimes by simply putting not.

Examples

  • You did not read your book – आपने अपनी पुस्तक नहीं पढ़ी
  • He did not see the picture – उसने तस्वीर नहीं देखी
  • He never went to Haridwar – वह कभी हरिद्वार नहीं गए
  • We could not help him –  हम उसकी मदद नहीं कर सके

 

INTERROGATIVE  SENTENCE IN PAST INDEFINITE  :

Yes/No type question-

Did + Subject ( I, You, We, They ) + VI ( First Form of Verb ) + Object + rest of sentence + question mark(?)

कभी नहीं  – अगर नेगेटिव वाकया है कभी नही अत है तो आपको Never का प्रयोग करना चाइये

Note:

  • The interrogative form of “have”in the simple past uses the auxiliary “did”.

Examples

  • Did you beat your friend? – क्या आपने अपने दोस्त को पीटा?
  • Did you never smoke? – क्या आपने कभी धूम्रपान नहीं किया?
  • Could you not meet your teacher? – क्या आप अपने शिक्षक से नहीं मिल सकते थे?
  • When did you sing a song? – आपने गाना कब गाया?

Wh type question-

Wh word (which, what, how, where, etc.) + did+ subject (you, I, They, etc.) + VI (First form of word) + object + rest of sentence + question mark (?)

Examples

  • When did you go to Delhi? आप दिल्ली कब गए?
  • when did she take the food?  उसने खाना कब लिया?
  • how did you read the books? आपने किताबें कैसे पढ़ीं?
  • Why did you beat me? तुमने मुझे क्यों पीटा?

THE PAST INDEFINITE TENSE IS USED:

  • frequency sometimes, often, always
    I sometimes walked down the street at evening.
    I often brought my breakfast in the office.
  • an indefinite phase in timethe other day, ages ago, a long time ago
    People worshiped in this temple a long time ago.
    She played the video game when she was young.
  • a definite point in timelast week, when I was a child, yesterday, six weeks ago
    We sawa good movie previous week.

EXAMPLES:

  • He played very well yesterday night.
  • We didn’t have any food left with us.
  • We gave him a bat on his birthday.
  • Did she arrived at the airport?
  • Where did he came from?
  • Which game did you played on saturday?
